"Go Fish!"
PENCIL, PHOTOSHOP + ILLUSTRATOR
7"x10"
WINTER 2008
Description:
I used to work as a swim instructor at the YWCA in high school. I did some cartoons for the swim team t-shirts. Years later the program director asked me to update their logo and create some new t-shirts.
These drawings were done in pencil, and then scanned into photoshop and colored and cleaned up. The logo was hand drawn then traced in illustrator so that it could be scaled to any size without quality loss, that way it could be used for large banners, and breast pockets on t-shirts.
For this cartoon I wanted to make it look like a playing card. The card's pattern of interlocking fish and seashells was inspired by M.C. Escher's tessellation work. It took me quite a bit of time to figure out how to make the fish interlock. I started with simple diamond shapes that fit together. Then in a process of trial and error, I would slowly add a fin on top and then two on the bottom to fill in the negative space, his mouth would fit into his tail fin, etc.
